WeChat has been proven to be a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) surveillance tool for many years. From 2019: "This March, Gevers found a Chinese database storing more than 1 billion WeChat conversations, including more than 3.7 billion messages, and tweeted out his findings. Each message had been tagged with a GPS location, and many included users' national identification numbers. I quite like this app. Our entire team are on-the-go and use it to keep in touch with each other and all our clients. It has a lot of very useful features; eg, file transfer. It's not bloatware and takes up very little process power when running in the background. It can also be used in conjunction with any other device you are using.
Yes, the CCP is monitoring and collecting data. But the same can be said for any government in the world.
I also noticed that many airports in Europe now use WeChat payment systems as well.
